KENSINGTON: Decoding

Targus Cable Lock:

Monday morning: i could not unlock my laptop!
it's a four number combination targus cable lock (Kensington computer cable lock)
i made a field expedient 'feeler' tool (bottom image) to decode the wheels and documented the procedure...

decoding procedure:

use a thin piece of plastic to 'read' notches at the bottom of each wheel
you will find two numbers on each wheel that 'click', the rest will be smooth
find these numbers for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd wheel, the 4th may be inconsistant and is unnecessary
write down both numbers for each of these wheels in a sequence so that adding 3 to the first yields the second:
if you find 1 & 8 on the first wheel, write 8 (9,0) 1
if you find 7 & 0 on the second wheel, write 7 (8,9) 0
if you find 7 & 4 on the third wheel, write 4 (4,6) 7

now add one number to each 'high' number for your combo: 218_
set the 1st three numbers and rotate last wheel until the lock opens
dyslexia: my combo was 2180, i could have sworn i set 2801 Friday but it did not work on Monday!
